The New Certification Process

ICEEFT is rolling out a new way to get certified. Here is what I’m understanding about the changes so far:

  • Your supervisor is now the "main approver" for your Certification

  • You will still “submit” two 20 min videos to your supervisor (or watch them together) as examples of Stage 1 and Stage 2 work.

  • You still have to submit one 20 min video segment and case conceptualization to a Trainer, that you and your supervisor will choose. The Trainer doesn’t give a “pass or fail”, they just give you feedback about your work so far. You can choose which video it is, it doesn’t have to be Stage 2. It can be any supervisor you choose, but probably helpful to be one you have some link with from Core Skills or your supervisor is familiar with.

  • You still do have to submit a packet to the board (see New Checklist below), but that packet does not contain video or transcripts.

  • There is a New Checklist to help you understand what is required

  • There is a New Skills Guidelines for Certification to help you understand what skills they are looking for

  • They are splitting up certification so that it is a separate certification for Individual Therapy (EFIT), Couples Therapy (EFCT), and Family Therapy (EFFT) - so you choose one modality at a time to get certified in.

A helpful video on this is on Success in Vulnerability, and you can watch it for free after entering your email address.

I have several supervisees who want more clarity with what points to hit to get a Stage 1 tape and a Stage 2 tape. I’ve tried to write this formula out about eight times, and I’ve realized it’s too nuanced to put into writing. I’m going to do a couple free zoom sessions where I’ll be happy to talk through any answers I have for the new Certification process, and also what I look for as hallmarks for strong Stage 1 and Stage 2 tapes. I’ll share those dates soon!
