I’ve been giving you guys some pretty heavy, long posts recently so I thought I would lighten it up with a fun, yet practical! therapist gift guide. It's never too late to tell a therapist you love them.
The GoPro Hero4 Camera
When I was looking for a way to record my sessions, I was totally surprised when someone at Best Buy suggested a GoPro. I never would have thought of an action camera for filming a therapy session. But it's super tiny, unobtrusive, and films great. The battery charge lasts about 2 hours, or you can record with it plugged into the charger. You can get a mini SD card in different sizes of storage - I have a small one on which I record one session at a time. The best part is the lens. It's a fantastic fish-eye lens which means it will capture my clients and me in the shot.
The perpetual issue with filming, for me and everyone else I've talked to, is the microphone quality. The GoPro audio is good enough, but it won't blow your mind. I'm in an office now with a loud AC, and it's drowning out my sessions, so I recently bought a microphone attachment for the GoPro and it's being shipped as we speak. I'm really, really hoping this gives me better audio.
When I told my co-worker that I use a GoPro to film, she thought I meant I wear the GoPro helmet on my head with the camera in session. I laughed for days about that image!
Can we ever have too many cozy, washable throws? Especially for those of us who work in older buildings where the cold seeps in through the windows. I’m not at the point where I think we should have matching couple snuggies, but I think that would be kind of hilarious.
I like the ones at Pottery Barn, and sometimes Costco has some good ones.
Dry Cleaning Gift Card
I don’t know about you, but it’s only December and already all my sweaters have sweat stains. I’ve never sweat so much in my life since I started doing couples therapy. And dry cleaning is expensive. Give the therapist you love cleaner clothes.
If the throw isn’t enough, and you and your clients are sitting with your arms tightly crossed to keep in the body heat, maybe a space heater is up your ally. I like that this one emits heat all around, since I’ve burned up my ankles trying to get warm from the one-directional heat.
OR if you really want to splurge, I just came across this heater/cooler from Dyson that looks glorious.
Vitruvi Essential Oil Diffuser
Guys, I am so obsessed with this one. I’ve dreamed about this for 2 years, but it’s expensive so I haven’t bought it. I mean, it's $119 for an oil diffuser. But it’s white. It’s stone. It looks like Gwyneth Paltrow personally brought it for me as a hostess gift for the dinner party I threw in my Provençal courtyard.
In beginning to hone my therapist work clothes style over the years, I’ve narrowed it down to “drapey layers plus jewelry” or “fancy aunt you can still hug.” I love a good low-key statement earring, and I recently found the glorious Machete jewelry and I want everything from this designer. I just bought the earrings here and I LOVE them. Her stuff is affordable, gorgeous, and unique.
The Big Kahuna
Yessssss. YES. We sit so much. Our hips hurt. Maybe there is some billionaire therapist benefactor who wants to give us each one of these.
And let's not forget a gift guide for our loved ones, who pick us up over and over when we come home saying we'll never get this right and we don't know what we're doing. I don't know what would be good enough, though. Maybe a diamond covered, massage-giving, chocolate dipped, puppy-cuddling, disco ball of gratitude?
